Range and oven repair for gas and electric kitchens

An oven that takes forever to light, a bake element that sparked and died, a burner stuck on high: we repair freestanding ranges, wall ovens and cooktops across the north end, gas and electric, with the price in writing before work starts.

Cooking appliances north of Seattle split roughly along the gas main. Where Puget Sound Energy gas runs down the street, as in many Brier, Mill Creek and Edmonds homes, gas ranges and cooktops are common, and the glow-bar oven igniter is the part we replace most. Areas where electric heat dominates, from Everett to Mountlake Terrace, lean toward coil, glass-top and, more and more, induction ranges. Kitchens built in the 1960s and 70s across Lynnwood, Shoreline and Edmonds still hold built-in wall ovens and separate cooktops, and many of those cabinet cutouts no longer match the sizes sold today, which tips the math toward repair. Ranges are also the appliance people keep longest without much thought, and a twenty-year-old gas range with a sound oven cavity is usually worth an igniter or a valve. Glass-top electric ranges dominate many apartments and condos, where a cracked top or a burned-out radiant element is the typical call.

Remodeled kitchens add pro-style ranges from Wolf, Thermador, Viking and BlueStar, with sealed burners, spark modules and convection fans that need their own parts. Self-clean cycles are another steady source of calls: hours of very high heat can blow a thermal fuse or jam the door lock, often right before a holiday dinner. If you smell gas around a range or cooktop, do not turn anything on or off. Get everyone outside, then call PSE at 1-888-225-5773 or dial 911 from there; we take over the repair after the leak is handled.

Range, oven and cooktop symptoms

  • Gas oven takes a minute or more to light, or never lights

    Likely cause
Weak glow-bar igniter not drawing enough current to open the safety valve
    What we do
Clamp an ammeter on the igniter, replace it, verify flame and temperature
  • Electric oven will not heat, element blistered or split

    Likely cause
Bake or broil element burned out
    What we do
Replace the element, check the terminals and wiring for heat damage
  • Baking runs 25°F off, or the display shows an F code

    Likely cause
Oven temperature sensor drifting or open
    What we do
Read sensor resistance at room temperature, replace, recheck with a reference thermometer
  • Surface burner or radiant element stuck on high, or dead

    Likely cause
Infinite switch, element or burner valve
    What we do
Test the switch and element at each setting, replace the failed one
  • Gas burners click nonstop or will not spark

    Likely cause
Moisture or a spill on a spark switch, or a failing spark module
    What we do
Dry and test the switches, replace the module or switch harness
  • Door locked after self-clean, or oven dead afterward

    Likely cause
Door lock motor, or a blown thermal fuse
    What we do
Release and test the lock, replace the fuse or the lock assembly

How we repair ranges, ovens and cooktops

An oven tells us a lot before any screw comes out. We run a bake cycle and watch the preheat. On gas ovens the igniter must pull a specific current before the safety valve opens, so we measure it rather than judging by its glow. On electric ovens we read the elements, the temperature sensor and the relay outputs on the control board. Cooktops get each burner or element tested at every setting, and induction units come with error logs we read first. When a board looks guilty, we confirm the parts it controls are healthy, because a shorted element can take a brand-new board down with it. On gas ranges we also check burner flame color and height, clear orifices partly blocked by boil-overs, and confirm the bake burner lights smoothly without a delayed puff.

We work on GE and GE Profile, Café, Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Frigidaire, Maytag, LG, Bosch, Thermador, Wolf and Viking, among others. The van carries universal and brand-specific igniters, bake and broil elements, temperature sensors, infinite switches and surface elements, so most range repairs finish on the first visit. Pro-style parts and some glass cooktop elements need ordering; you will know that, and the price, before you approve. For a wall oven or cooktop in an older kitchen, we can also tell you whether a replacement would fit the existing cutout, which is sometimes the deciding fact. Parts for older wall ovens are often still sold by the manufacturer or as universal replacements, so age alone rarely ends a repair. Before we leave, the oven runs a full preheat while we compare its reading with our own thermometer, so you know it bakes true.

Range and oven repair starting prices

Range and oven repair starts at $259. Think of that as the entry point for the category in this part of the region, not as the price for your range; brand and whether the unit has to come out of the cabinet both count. Surface elements, burner switches and oven sensors sit near the start of the scale, gas igniters and bake or broil elements in the middle, and control boards, pro-style ranges and induction electronics toward the top. The exact price for your model is in the written estimate we give you after the diagnostic, before we begin. If an older range needs a board and an element at once, the estimate also notes what a comparable new range would cost.

Common questions

Why does my gas oven smell of gas for a few seconds when it lights?

A brief whiff at ignition is common with a weakening igniter, because gas flows a little longer before it catches. A strong or lasting smell is different: leave the house and call PSE or 911 from outside. When the delay creeps toward a minute, the igniter is usually tired, and replacing it ends both the delay and most of the smell.

Can a cracked glass cooktop be repaired?

The glass is replaced as a complete top, not patched. Stop using a cracked cooktop, because spills can reach live parts underneath. Whether a new top makes sense depends on the model's age and what a replacement top costs next to a new range. Burned-out radiant elements and switches under intact glass are routine repairs.

Should I use the self-clean cycle?

It works, but it runs the oven far hotter than cooking for hours, and that heat is the most common trigger for blown thermal fuses, stuck door locks and cooked control boards on older ranges. If you use it, stay home, run it well before a big meal, and wipe out heavy spills first. Many owners clean by hand and skip it.

Do you repair induction ranges?

Yes. Induction is turning up in more new and remodeled kitchens, partly as homes move away from gas. Most faults sit in the power boards, cooling fans or touch controls rather than the coils. We read the error codes, test the boards and put the repair in writing; some boards are ordered, so we give you the timing as well as the price.

My oven temperature is off. Can I just adjust it?

Many electronic ovens let you offset the temperature by up to about 35 degrees in the settings menu, which helps when it is only slightly off. If the error is larger, changes over time or comes with an F code, the sensor or board is the likelier cause. We check the sensor against a reference thermometer and replace what is failing.
