GE Dryer Grinding or Drum Not Turning? Meet the Rear Bearing GE Built Differently
GE dryers hang the drum on a rear bearing and front slides, unlike roller-based brands. What the grinding means, the bearing kit fix, and belt checks on GE.
Formerly Adam & Sam Brothers RepairGas & electric dryer repair
When a dryer quits heating, needs two cycles for towels or squeals on every turn, the failed part is only half the answer. Our technicians replace it and measure the airflow, so the new part is not killed by the same clogged duct.
Around Puget Sound, slow drying is the dryer complaint we hear most, and the reason is in the air. Marine humidity keeps lint tacky, so it sticks to duct walls instead of blowing outside, and the convergence-zone drizzle that soaks Edmonds, Lynnwood and Bothell keeps exterior vent hoods damp for months. Floor plans make it worse. Townhomes built since 2000 in Mill Creek, Bothell and north Lynnwood often route the vent twenty or thirty feet to a roof cap, and older houses in Shoreline and Everett may still have a crushed foil transition hose behind the machine. A restricted vent drives exhaust temperature up until a thermal fuse or high-limit opens and the heat disappears. Lint that escapes the duct also gathers around the burner or element inside the cabinet, which makes a clogged vent a fire risk and not only a waste of energy.
We repair electric dryers, which run on a 240-volt double breaker, and gas dryers fed by Puget Sound Energy lines. Brands we see weekly include Whirlpool, Maytag, Kenmore, GE, LG, Samsung, Electrolux and Speed Queen. Old Kenmore and Whirlpool machines with mechanical timers are some of the easiest appliances in any house to keep running, and we will say so before you shop for a new one. Newer models with steam and sensor programs carry more electronics, but their belts, rollers and heaters wear out the same way. A laundry room in a damp basement can also rust drum seams and cabinet floors on older machines, and we point that out when it changes the repair-or-replace answer. If you ever smell gas near a gas dryer, leave the house first and phone PSE at 1-888-225-5773, or 911, from outside; we handle the repair once the line is safe.
Every no-heat or slow-dry visit includes an airflow reading at the exterior vent with the dryer running. A strong push that slaps the hood flap open is healthy; a weak breath means the duct is part of the problem, and replacing a thermal fuse without clearing it just schedules the next failure. Inside the cabinet we work the safety chain in order: thermal fuse, high-limit and cycling thermostats, element or burner, then timer or board. On GE's open-coil elements we look for a broken coil touching the housing. On gas models we watch the ignition sequence through the burner window. For drum noise, the drum comes out so we can feel each roller and the idler pulley instead of guessing by ear. Whenever a gas connection has been disturbed, we leak-test the fittings with a bubble solution or an electronic detector before the dryer goes back against the wall.
The van holds thermal fuses, thermostats, elements, igniters and gas valve coils, plus belts, idlers and roller kits for common Whirlpool, GE and LG platforms, so most dryer repairs end the same visit. Vent cleaning is a separate service we can do on the spot when a long or rooftop run needs more than a brush from the laundry room. On stacked units in condos, we pull the pair forward carefully and check the transition hose, which is often crushed flat against the wall. Any vinyl or thin foil hose we find gets replaced with semi-rigid metal duct, since plastic is both a fire hazard and a lint trap of its own. Washer acting up too? Have us look at both on the same trip and the second diagnostic drops by $10.

Dryer repair starts at $235 across our service area. The common jobs run from clearing a clogged vent and replacing a thermal fuse or thermostat to a new heating element on an electric model, a gas igniter, a roller kit or, at the upper end, a control board. That figure shows where our prices begin in the area rather than a quote for your dryer; a rooftop vent, a buried element or a hard-to-reach stacked unit changes the work. After the diagnostic you get the exact price in a written estimate and decide from there, and when a dryer is near the end of its useful life, the estimate says that plainly too.
Starting prices for the north Seattle area, 2026. The $85 diagnostic is included in any repair you approve, and the exact price is in the written estimate before work starts.

Dryer
GE electric dryers use open-coil heating elements that break with age, backed by safety thermostats that trip from vent restriction. Our GE diagnosis order.
Dryer
A dead GE dryer is usually power, the door switch or the belt, rarely the board. Our five-minute elimination checklist for GE dryers that won't start.
A thermal fuse is a one-time safety that opens when exhaust air gets too hot. When a new one fails within weeks, the vent is almost always restricted, or occasionally a cycling thermostat is sticking. We replace the fuse and measure airflow at the outside hood, so you are not paying for the same fuse again next month.
For a short run straight out a wall, every year or two is usually enough. Long runs, rooftop terminations and vents with several elbows need yearly attention in our damp climate, because sticky lint builds faster. Signs it is due: drying times creeping up, a hot laundry room, or a hood flap that barely moves while the dryer runs.
Tumbling clothes without heat will not hurt anything, but stop using the dryer if you smell burning, see a scorched cord or outlet, or the cabinet is too hot to touch. Those point to a shorted element or a failing connection. With a gas dryer, any gas odor means leaving the house and calling PSE or 911 from outside.
Two metal bars inside the drum read moisture when wet clothes touch them. Dryer sheets and fabric softener coat the bars with a waxy film, so the sensor reports dry too early. Wipe them with rubbing alcohol on a cloth. If the problem continues, we test the sensor circuit and the board that reads it.
Yes, and they are usually worth it. Speed Queen and the older Whirlpool-built Kenmore models use simple, durable parts that are still made and stocked, so a belt, roller, fuse or element brings them back for years. We will be clear when a dryer has a rusted-through drum or a seized motor and is better replaced.
