Edmonds range repair, from pro-style dual fuel to the 1960s rambler

Edmonds kitchens range from remodeled view homes with 36- and 48-inch dual-fuel ranges to 1960s hillside houses on their third stove. We repair both, across the Bowl, Five Corners, Esperance and Woodway, twelve to fifteen minutes west on Edmonds Way.

Drive time
12–15 minutes off-peak along SR 104, Edmonds Way.
Gas share
About half of Edmonds homes; roughly 83% in Woodway.
Busiest decade
The 1960s built about a quarter of all Edmonds homes.

Edmonds was platted in 1884, but most of its houses came much later. Hillside subdivisions spread through the 1950s and 60s, the city's largest annexations happened in the early 1960s, the southern neighborhoods joined in 1995 to 1997, and condo buildings went up on the hilltops in 2007 and 2008. About 42% of homes date from 1960 to 1979. Many of those view houses above the Bowl, in Seaview and along Sherwood have since been remodeled around a serious range: a 36- or 48-inch Wolf, Thermador, Viking or Monogram, often dual fuel, with gas burners on top and an electric convection oven below.

Dual fuel means two systems sharing one box, and we diagnose them separately. The cooktop has its own valves, spark module and reignition, and the oven has elements, a convection fan, a sensor and a control. The other half of Edmonds is quieter: 1960s ramblers in Westgate, Firdale and Perrinville still running a freestanding range or an original-size wall oven, and apartments and condos along Highway 99 with standard electric models. We repair those just as often, along with the older gas ranges in Esperance and around Westgate whose burners and igniters have simply worn out with use.

What we see on Edmonds ranges, pro-style and standard

  • A burner clicks to relight itself over and over

    Likely cause
Reignition sensing a weak flame: dirty burner head or a failing spark module
    What we do
Clean the burner and electrode, then test the module
  • Dual-fuel oven will not reach temperature

    Likely cause
Failing bake or convection element on the electric oven
    What we do
Test each element and the fan, then replace the failed part
  • Convection fan rattles or squeals

    Likely cause
Worn motor bearings or a loose fan blade
    What we do
Replace the motor or blade and inspect the element ring
  • Infrared broiler on a gas range stays dark

    Likely cause
Broiler igniter or its gas valve has failed
    What we do
Test the igniter and valve and fit the correct part for the model
  • Heavy oven door slams down or will not stay put

    Likely cause
Broken hinge spring on a wide pro-style door
    What we do
Replace the hinges as a set and rebalance the door
  • Original 1960s wall oven bakes unevenly

    Likely cause
Element or thermostat wear on an aging unit
    What we do
Test elements and thermostat, and check whether parts are still made

Woodway estates, Esperance ramblers and the Bowl

Woodway, which shares Edmonds' 98020 ZIP code, is the most gas-heavy community we serve: about 83% of its homes heat with gas, nearly all are detached houses, and many sit on lots of a third of an acre to two acres. Those kitchens are where most of the pro-style ranges and separate gas cooktops we repair live. Esperance, the unincorporated pocket inside Edmonds whose voters have turned down annexation five times, leans gas too, at about 67%, with roughly a third of its homes built in the 1950s. Woodway also has some of the newest kitchens in the area, including the 94 homes of Woodway Highlands, the first of which were finished in 2003.

Across all of these neighborhoods, Snohomish County PUD supplies the power and PSE the gas. A range with gas burners is safe to repair, but a gas leak is not something to troubleshoot: if you smell gas, leave the house and call PSE at 1-888-225-5773 or 911 once you are outside. Pro-style ranges are heavy, so when we pull one out to reach the connection, we protect the floor and leak-check the fitting when it goes back. Pro ranges with infrared broilers or griddles have their own gas valves and igniters, and we test each one separately.

Downtown, between the fountain roundabout and the ferry terminal at Brackett's Landing, parking and stairs are the main planning issues; the hilltop condos and the Highway 99 apartments usually mean garages and elevators. Tell us when you book and we will plan the visit around it. Most of Edmonds gets Everett's very soft water through the Alderwood district, so the steam-assist ovens in remodeled kitchens rarely scale up. Their failures, like everyone else's, come from heat and wear on electrical parts.

Starting prices, from standard to pro ranges

Range and oven repair in Edmonds starts at $259. On a standard gas range, that usually means an oven igniter, a temperature sensor or, at the upper end, a control board. Wolf, Thermador, Viking and similar pro ranges sit higher on the scale, so we price those jobs for your exact model. None of this is a quote: the written estimate comes after the $85 diagnostic, which is included in the repair price once you give the go-ahead.

Keep the pro range, replace the old wall oven?

Pro-style ranges are built to be serviced. Burners, spark modules, igniters, elements, convection motors, hinges and boards can all be replaced, and on a range that cost what these do, repair is the right answer in almost every case unless the oven cavity itself has failed. The decision is harder on a 1960s or 70s wall oven. Its cutout is often smaller than today's standard sizes, so a new oven may need cabinet work, which argues for repairing as long as elements and thermostats are still available. Once a control or thermostat for an old wall oven has been discontinued, we tell you, and replacement becomes the realistic path. For freestanding ranges in condos and Highway 99 apartments, the test is simple: when the repair total sits well below a comparable new range and the rest of the unit is sound, repair wins. While we are there, ask us to look at the flame pattern on the burners; a lazy or lifting flame on a pro cooktop usually needs only cleaning and adjustment.

Common questions

Do you repair Wolf, Thermador and Viking ranges?

Yes. Pro-style ranges are common in Edmonds and Woodway remodels, and we repair their burners, spark modules, reignition systems, convection fans, elements, hinges and controls. Some of their parts are not stocked on the van, so we may need to order and return. You get the written price for your model before any part is ordered.

Do you come to Woodway and Esperance?

Yes, both are on our regular route, twelve to fifteen minutes from the shop along SR 104 off-peak. Book in the morning, Monday through Saturday, and we can usually come out the same day. Woodway's long drives and Esperance's side streets are no problem; let us know about gates or parking when you book.

My dual-fuel range lights on top, but the oven will not heat. Why?

On a dual-fuel range the oven is electric, so a working gas cooktop tells us nothing about it. The usual causes are a failed bake or convection element, a sensor, or a relay on the control. We test the oven circuits on their own and replace only the part that has failed.

How do you pull out a heavy pro-style range without marking the floor?

We lay down protection before anything moves and slide the range out on its own leveling legs or on appliance glides, then shut off and disconnect the gas or power properly. After the repair we reconnect, leak-test any gas fitting, re-level the range and confirm the anti-tip bracket is engaged. Mention delicate flooring when you book.

Is my 1960s wall oven worth repairing?

Often, if the cavity and door are sound and the parts are still made. Elements and some thermostats remain available for many older models. Because older cutouts are often smaller than current ovens, replacement can involve cabinet changes, which makes repair more attractive. If a key part has been discontinued, we will say so before you spend anything.
