Frigidaire Ice Maker Not Working: Fill Valve First, Then the Frozen Tube, Then the Module
Frigidaire ice makers stop over water delivery more than mechanism: weeping fill valves, frozen fill tubes, starved flow. The check order that works.

Small hollow cubes, an empty bin, a dispenser that hums and delivers nothing: an ice maker fails somewhere along a short chain from the house line to the mold. We test each link in order and replace only the one that broke.
Ice makers are the first part of a refrigerator to complain when something upstream is slightly off. A freezer drifting from 0°F to 12°F still keeps food frozen, yet ice slows to a trickle because the mold never reaches harvest temperature. A filter past its six-month change, a valve that barely opens, or a slow drip freezing inside the fill tube can each stop ice entirely while the rest of the refrigerator seems fine. Across the north Seattle suburbs, from Shoreline to Mill Creek, that is what most ice calls turn out to be: a water or temperature problem surfacing first at the ice maker. That is why the most useful thing you can do before the visit is leave a thermometer in the freezer for a few hours and note the reading.
A few local conditions shape the work. Water from both the Everett and Tolt supplies is very soft, so the mineral scale that clogs ice valves in other regions is rare here, and cloudy cubes usually mean trapped air rather than minerals. What we do find are starved supplies: old saddle valves pierced into copper lines decades ago, long plastic lines snaking behind cabinets, and reverse-osmosis systems teed into the refrigerator feed at marginal pressure. A refrigerator pushed back after a remodel or a move can also kink its supply line behind the cabinet and cut flow to a trickle. Heat waves bring the other spike. During hot spells like the June 2021 heat dome, garage freezers and in-door ice compartments fall behind, and the calls arrive all at once.
We start with a thermometer in the freezer, because an ice maker that is merely starved of cold does not need parts. Next comes the water side: filter age, flow at the dispenser, and a pressure reading at the refrigerator inlet. The dual inlet valve gets a meter on each solenoid; one feeds the ice maker and one feeds the dispenser, and they fail independently, which explains the common case of water working while ice does not. Then we check the fill tube for an ice plug and the module through its test points. Most ice makers are replaced as an assembly rather than rebuilt, so proving the fault first keeps you from buying one you never needed. On side-by-sides with an ice level sensor in the door, a status light or blink code often names the fault before any panel comes off. If the freezer itself turns out to be the problem, we quote that as a refrigerator repair, so the ice maker is not blamed for a cooling fault.
We work on ice makers in Whirlpool, KitchenAid, Maytag, GE, Café, Frigidaire, LG, Bosch, Sub-Zero, Thermador and older Kenmore refrigerators, plus undercounter ice makers in remodeled kitchens and wet bars. Inlet valves, common ice maker assemblies and filters ride on the van, so most visits end with water filling the mold before we pack up. In-door ice systems, the kind built into a French-door refrigerator door, take longer because the compartment seal and the cold-air duct from the freezer both matter. If the refrigerator also has a cooling complaint, we look at that during the same visit. When an old saddle valve or a brittle supply line is the root problem, we recommend a proper quarter-turn valve and a braided line, which also lowers the risk of a slow leak behind the refrigerator.

Ice maker repair starts at $295. The jobs behind most calls are a frozen fill line thawed and protected from refreezing, a new ice maker fill valve, and a complete ice maker assembly, which sits at the upper end. That figure shows where the category begins locally; it is not a quote. Your model and how much of the door or freezer has to come apart decide the rest, and the exact price is in the written estimate after the diagnostic, so nothing is replaced until you agree. Thin ice caused by a starved filter sometimes needs nothing more than a new cartridge, and we will tell you when that is the whole fix.

Your Kenmore ice maker's real builder (Whirlpool, LG or Frigidaire) sets the diagnosis: fill tubes and optics on 106s, ice-room icing on 795s, valves on 253s.
Ice maker
LG French-door ice makers fail in predictable ways: frozen fill tubes, clogged filters starving the flow, iced-up in-door ice rooms and tired fill valves.
Hot kitchens and garages make the freezer work harder, doors open more often, and the mold takes longer to reach harvest temperature. Garage refrigerators are hit hardest, since many are not built for very hot rooms. If ice returns when the weather cools, the cooling system is likely fine; if production stays low, we check the condenser, fans and freezer temperature.
Yes, gently: switch the ice maker off, then warm the tube area with a hair dryer on low or a cloth soaked in warm water, keeping water away from wiring. That restores ice for a while, but the tube usually refreezes because something caused it, such as a weeping valve or low flow. Finding that cause is what makes the repair last.
Most manufacturers suggest about every six months, sooner if flow drops. An overdue filter is the easiest cause of small cubes and a slow dispenser to fix yourself. Use a filter that fits your model properly, since a poorly seated cartridge can leak or bypass. After changing it, run a few glasses through the dispenser to clear air from the line.
We do. Standalone undercounter units in kitchens, basements and wet bars need periodic cleaning, and many clear-ice models rely on a pump and a gravity drain that can clog. We check the water supply, drain, pump and the cutting grid or evaporator, then quote the repair in writing before starting.
Less often than in hard-water regions, but yes. Soft water rarely leaves scale, yet ice bins collect odors and stale cubes, and the mold can grow a slimy film when the machine sits unused. Empty and wash the bin every few months, and toss the first batch after a long trip or a filter change.
