Frigidaire Ice Maker Not Working: Fill Valve First, Then the Frozen Tube, Then the Module
Frigidaire ice makers stop over water delivery more than mechanism: weeping fill valves, frozen fill tubes, starved flow. The check order that works.
Formerly Adam & Sam Brothers RepairIce makers · Everett, north end to south end
Everett supplies the soft water most of Snohomish County drinks, and its homes run from 1900s mill-town houses to south-end apartments. We repair refrigerator ice makers in all of them and write the price down before any work.
Everett is where the region's water starts. The city draws from Spada Lake on the Sultan River, filters it at the Chaplain Reservoir plant built in 1983, and sends it to roughly 670,000 people, about three-quarters of the homes and businesses in Snohomish County. Total hardness runs from about 10 to 16 ppm, and the utility adds soda ash to raise the pH and protect pipes from corrosion. For an ice maker, that is close to ideal water. Valves and molds do not scale up here; they fail when a coil burns out, a seal hardens or a motor wears.
The housing is far more varied than the water. About 16% of Everett's homes, more than 7,400 of them, predate 1940, most in north Everett neighborhoods like Riverside, Northwest and Rucker Hill. Wartime housing followed at Baker Heights in 1943. South Everett came in through annexations from 1959 to 1972 and grew with Boeing. Only about 44% of homes are detached houses, while some 28% sit in buildings of two to nineteen units: duplexes, fourplexes and small apartment blocks where the refrigerator belongs to a landlord and the tenant is the one calling about ice.
The early 1900s houses of north Everett were built with basements or crawl spaces, and the refrigerator line was added decades later, usually stapled along the joists from the nearest cold pipe to the kitchen above. Those long runs have more joints, and each joint is a place to weep. When ice slows in one of these homes, we check the shutoff and follow the line before touching the refrigerator. Some of these homes still have very old shutoff valves that turn but no longer seal fully, so we test the one feeding the refrigerator before relying on it to change a valve. It is our longest drive in the city, about 25–32 minutes off-peak to the Legion Park area, and it carries no extra charge. Closer in, Angel of the Winds Arena, Everett Station and the Port of Everett waterfront anchor the central neighborhoods, where newer apartment buildings stand next to houses from the early 1900s.
South Everett, from Silver Lake and Cascade View to Holly, Evergreen and the streets around Everett Mall, is closer at about 18–23 minutes and has more apartments and duplexes. Rentals turn over regularly, and with Naval Station Everett nearby moves are part of life; a refrigerator that sat in an empty unit for weeks often comes back with stale ice, an expired filter and air in the line. On hot days the picture changes: around 104°F was unofficially reported near I-5 on June 28, 2021, and kitchens without air conditioning push refrigerators hard enough that ice production is the first casualty. Paine Field, on the city's southwest edge, set its official record of 100°F in 2009 and tied it in 2020, so these hot spells are not one-offs.
If you manage several units, list the model number of each tenant's refrigerator in the booking form, or read them to us over the phone, and we can check parts before we come. We put each estimate in writing so the owner can approve it. Some older duplexes and fourplexes have no separate shutoff for each kitchen, so changing a valve can mean turning off water to the whole building for a short time; a heads-up to the neighbors helps.

On Everett's soft water, repairs are about worn parts rather than mineral damage: a new fill valve, a frozen fill line thawed and protected so it does not freeze again, or a complete replacement ice maker. Ice maker repair here starts at $295, a starting price for the north Seattle metro rather than a quote for the tenant's refrigerator. The $85 diagnostic shows what failed, the estimate the owner approves puts the exact amount in writing, and it absorbs the diagnostic once you approve. For a landlord with a second appliance in the same unit, the second diagnostic is $10 less. If the line itself is the problem in a north-end basement, replacing the stretch from the shutoff to the refrigerator is priced on the estimate once we have measured it.
Starting prices for the north Seattle area, 2026. The $85 diagnostic is included in any repair you approve, and the exact price is in the written estimate before work starts.
For a rental refrigerator, repair almost always pays. A valve or module costs a fraction of a new unit plus delivery and haul-away, and it keeps the tenant's kitchen working without a gap. We switch to recommending replacement when the ice failure sits on top of a cooling problem, such as a freezer that cannot reach 0°F or a compressor that will not start, on a unit past about fifteen years. In north Everett's older houses, the kitchen opening matters as well. Many were remodeled around a particular refrigerator width, and older cabinetry sometimes fits only narrower models, so keeping a sound refrigerator running with a new ice maker is often the simpler choice. If the supply line is the problem, it needs fixing whatever refrigerator sits in front of it.
No. Everett's Spada Lake water averages around 12.5 ppm of total hardness, which is very soft, and the city adjusts the pH to limit corrosion. Scale inside fill valves and molds is rare here. Cloudy cubes come from trapped air, and odd tastes usually come from an old filter or ice left sitting in the bin.
Yes. Tenants can call or book online, and we write the estimate so you can approve it before any work starts. If we check a second appliance in the same unit on that visit, its diagnostic is $10 less. The model number, typed into the form or given on the phone by the tenant, helps us bring the right part.
No. There is no distance surcharge anywhere in Everett. North Everett is about 25–32 minutes away in light traffic and the south end around 18–23. Phoning us in the morning, Monday to Saturday, usually means a visit that same day.
Yes. As part of the diagnosis we follow the line from the shutoff to the refrigerator wherever we can reach it, looking for weeping joints, kinks and old fittings. If the problem is in house plumbing inside a wall, we show you where so a plumber can deal with it, and you are not charged for refrigerator parts that would not help.
The model and serial numbers from the tag inside the refrigerator, plus a sentence about what the ice maker is doing: no ice, small cubes, leaking or noisy. If you can safely see behind the fridge, tell us whether the supply line is plastic, copper or braided steel too. That lets us check part numbers and load the likely valve or ice maker.
