GE Dryer Grinding or Drum Not Turning? Meet the Rear Bearing GE Built Differently
GE dryers hang the drum on a rear bearing and front slides, unlike roller-based brands. What the grinding means, the bearing kit fix, and belt checks on GE.

In Edmonds the dryer usually lives on a slope: a daylight lower floor in the Bowl, a garage laundry in Perrinville, a condo closet up the hill. We repair both gas and electric models, twelve to fifteen minutes west along SR 104.
Edmonds climbs straight up from the ferry dock. The Bowl, Seaview and the slopes above Brackett's Landing filled with hillside subdivisions in the 1950s and 1960s, the largest annexations came in the early 1960s, and the southern neighborhoods joined between 1995 and 1997. On that terrain a house often has its main floor at street level and a daylight floor below, and the laundry tends to end up downstairs, with the dryer duct leaving through the downhill wall toward the view. That arrangement works fine until the hood, sitting in the wind off Puget Sound, starts to corrode or stick.
Gas is the other Edmonds theme. Half of the homes in the city heat with it, roughly two-thirds in the Esperance enclave and more than four in five in neighboring Woodway, so gas dryers are a regular part of our work here. We carry igniters and valve coils along with heating elements, fuses and rollers, and you receive a written price before any repair starts. The drive is short too: SR 104 brings us from Mountlake Terrace to most Edmonds addresses in twelve to fifteen minutes off-peak.
Near the water, the dryer's weak point is outside the house. Along the downtown waterfront, around the Edmonds Marsh and up through Seaview and Meadowdale, damp salt air pits thin aluminum vent hoods and stiffens the hinge on the flap. Some flaps freeze half-open, which lets wind push cold, wet air back down the duct; others seize shut and choke the exhaust. Wind-driven rain also finds its way into a hood that faces the Sound, and a few cups of water sitting in a low elbow will mat lint into a plug. We replace corroded hoods with heavier ones, set the duct with a slight fall toward the outside and check that the flap swings open and drops shut on its own before we leave.
Up the hill the setting changes. Five Corners, Westgate, Firdale, Sherwood and the Highway 99 corridor are mostly 1960s and 1970s ramblers and split-levels, with laundry off the garage or on a lower floor, plus apartment blocks along 99 and hilltop condos built around 2007 and 2008. In those condos the dryer duct often runs up to a roof cap, which can clog with lint where no resident can see it. We clean from the dryer as far as we can reach, measure flow, and tell you or the association plainly if the roof end needs attention.
Esperance and Woodway lean heavily on gas, and many Esperance homes date from the 1950s. On older gas dryers there we look over the flexible connector as part of the visit; an aging one is worth replacing. Anyone who notices a gas smell by the laundry should get out of the house before doing anything else and ring PSE on 1-888-225-5773, or 911, once outside. Electricity, by the way, comes from Snohomish County PUD throughout Edmonds, and an electric dryer that heats on one setting but not another is usually a dryer fault rather than a supply problem.

Dryer repair in Edmonds begins at $235. Gas models here tend to need an igniter or a pair of valve coils, lint-packed vents call for cleaning out to the hood end, and electric dryers mostly come down to heating elements. That is not a quote: it marks where our prices open, and your exact figure comes on the written estimate that follows the $85 diagnostic, before anything is replaced. Approve that figure and the diagnostic becomes part of it instead of a separate line. A worn hood we replace during a vent cleaning is listed on the same estimate, so you see the whole job before saying yes.

Salt air is hard on vent hoods but rarely on the dryer itself, which sits indoors and ages at the normal pace. So the decision usually comes down to the machine's condition and the effort of moving it. In hillside homes with the laundry on a lower floor reached by outside steps or a narrow stair, swapping a dryer is more work than most people expect, which favors repairing anything with a sound drum and motor. Gas dryers in Esperance and Woodway homes often have years left once an igniter or coil set is replaced. We lean toward replacement when the drum is rusting, the motor and a drum bearing are failing together, or a newer electronic dryer needs a main board on top of another major part. Whatever the case, the written estimate shows the repair cost so you can set it beside the price of a new machine.
Mostly through the vent. Salt air corrodes thin hoods and sticks their flaps, and wind off the Sound can push rain into the duct. The dryer indoors ages normally. When we visit a waterfront or Seaview home, we check the hood and the last few feet of duct as part of any dryer call.
Yes. Esperance, the unincorporated pocket surrounded by Edmonds, and the Town of Woodway are both well inside our area, about twelve to fifteen minutes from our shop. Many homes in both run gas dryers, and we carry the gas parts for them along with the electric ones.
We clean from the dryer through every section reachable from inside your unit and measure the airflow coming out. If the blockage is at a roof cap we can't safely access, we tell you exactly where it is so the association or building maintenance can clear it from above. That way nobody pays twice for guessing.
Two things are safe and worth a minute: clean the lint screen, and look at the breaker panel to make sure both halves of the dryer's double breaker are fully on. A half-tripped breaker often lets the drum turn with no heat. If neither fixes it, give us a call and we'll take it from there.
If your call or online booking reaches us before the morning is out, a technician can typically be at an Edmonds door that same day, any day from Monday to Saturday; the run from Mountlake Terrace takes a quarter hour or less outside rush periods. If you're near the ferry terminal, mention it when booking so we can plan around ferry traffic.
