GE Dryer Grinding or Drum Not Turning? Meet the Rear Bearing GE Built Differently
GE dryers hang the drum on a rear bearing and front slides, unlike roller-based brands. What the grinding means, the bearing kit fix, and belt checks on GE.

Bothell straddles the King–Snohomish line and three very different kinds of housing. We repair dryers in downtown townhomes, North Creek and Canyon Park subdivisions and manufactured homes, seventeen to twenty-two minutes from our shop.
Bothell turned into a commuter town when I-405 opened in 1968, gained office parks in North Creek and Canyon Park in the 1980s and 1990s, and then added residents at a pace few neighbors matched through the 2010s. Around 1,300 apartments and townhomes went up downtown along the way, near Main Street, the Park at Bothell Landing and the UW Bothell and Cascadia campus. Today about 39% of the city's homes date from 2000 or later. Bothell also has something most of our cities don't: about 6% of homes are manufactured homes, a little more in the Bothell West area just outside city limits.
Each of those housing types breaks a dryer differently. Townhome dryers suffer from long ducts that climb to the roof. Subdivision dryers near the garage get heavy family use. Manufactured-home dryers sometimes vent where they shouldn't. Heating is split almost evenly between gas and electricity, with PSE gas citywide and electricity from PSE on the King County side and Snohomish County PUD on the north side, so we see both kinds of dryer in roughly equal numbers. The biotech and office campuses in Canyon Park and North Creek also mean plenty of households where everyone is out all day, so the laundry piles up for evenings and Saturdays and the dryer runs back-to-back loads when it does run.
Downtown townhomes usually stack three floors, with a laundry closet on the top or middle level and a duct that heads up through the ceiling to a roof cap. That route is long, hot in summer and invisible from inside. Within a few years it can collect enough lint to double drying times, and owners of nearly new dryers are surprised to hear the machine is fine. We clean from the dryer end, measure the exhaust that actually reaches the roof, and give you a written note if the cap needs attention from the association. If you rent your townhome out, we can phone you directly about that note and the repair quote, which keeps tenants from waiting on a back-and-forth.
North Creek, Canyon Park, Queensborough and Thrasher's Corner are mostly 1980s to 2000s subdivisions with the laundry beside the garage. Those dryers carry big family loads year-round, because the Convergence Zone keeps this end of the county damp for long stretches, and the wear shows in rollers, belts and heating parts. Westhill and the older streets near downtown add some earlier ramblers to the mix. Back-to-back loads are hard on a dryer with even a slightly restricted vent, because the heater cycles against its high-limit over and over; the thermal fuse is often the first part to give up, followed by the element on electric models.
Manufactured homes call for a specific check. A dryer there must exhaust past the skirting to open air, not into the space beneath the floor, yet we regularly find ducts that end under the home or have slipped off their fitting. The result is lint and moisture collecting under the floor, damp insulation and a dryer that runs hot. We extend or replace the duct with metal, fit a proper hood on the skirting, and clear what has built up near the opening.

In Bothell, dryer repair starts at $235. Vent cleaning, roof-bound runs included, sits alongside heating elements and the occasional control board as the work we do most here. That amount is an opening figure across the service area, not a number tied to your model. Once the $85 diagnostic shows what's wrong, you get a single written price, and if you approve it, the diagnostic is included rather than billed again.

Age is less of a guide in Bothell than layout. In a townhome, a slow dryer that is only five years old almost always needs its duct cleaned, not a replacement, and a new machine connected to the same clogged run would struggle just as much. In the subdivision houses, dryers from the 2000s are reaching the age where rollers, belts and heaters wear out; those parts are inexpensive, so the repair usually lands well below the price of a new unit and fixing wins if the drum and motor are sound. Electronic models with a failed main board past about ten years old are the real judgment calls, and we'll show you the numbers side by side. In manufactured homes, space and door widths can limit which dryers fit, which tips the balance further toward keeping a machine that still works well once its vent is corrected. A written price in hand makes the comparison simple.
Not to us. The county line runs through the middle of Bothell, and we treat Main Street, Westhill, Canyon Park and the unincorporated pockets around North Creek exactly the same. Expect roughly 17 to 22 minutes of driving off-peak, the same scheduling as anywhere else, and no distance surcharge on either side.
Yes. Dryer exhaust carries lint and a lot of moisture, and releasing it under the home feeds mold and soaks insulation. It also makes the dryer run hotter. We reroute the duct past the skirting to open air with a proper hood, then clean what we can reach underneath near the opening.
Usually the duct, not the dryer. Townhome vents often climb two floors to a roof cap, and lint builds up quickly on that route. A newer dryer may also show a vent warning. We measure exhaust flow, clean the run and confirm the improvement before we leave.
We do, along with Whirlpool, Maytag, LG, Samsung, GE, Electrolux and other brands, both gas and electric. Speed Queen machines are built to last, and most of their wear parts are easy to replace. We carry common parts on the van so most fixes are done before we leave.
Yes. Add the washer to the visit and its diagnostic drops by $10. That's handy when clothes come out of the washer wetter than they should and the dryer gets blamed for slow drying. You still approve each machine's repair separately, in writing.
